Unique demonstarion held in Budapest: judges protested for the freedom of the judiciary – PHOTOS

Judges held a demonstration in Budapest on Saturday for the freedom of the judiciary, organised by the Hungarian Judiciary Association (MABIE).

Judges for the freedom of the judiciary

MABIE head Katalin Boros said at the protest held in front of the Justice Ministry that judges felt that recent measures had curbed judicial independence. Organisational and legal status reforms were adopted by the legislative and executive branches without substantial consultation with the judiciary, she said.

Judiciary employees were increasingly vulnerable because there had been no adequate wage raises, she added. Full independence and adequate pay were key to serving the public, she said. “If judicial independence is shaken, the rights of all citizens are at risk, because there is no freedom without an independent judiciary,” she said.

Mikael Sjoberg, the head of the European Association of Judges (EAJ), said the protest was a sign of “the rule of law facing an ultimate challenge in Hungary”. The EAJ supports the demonstration, he said.

Sjoberg said that at the end of last year, the EAJ sent a letter to the Hungarian justice minister, protesting against the government’s attempt to make wage hikes conditional on introducing judicial reforms which the EAJ said undermined judicial independence.

Duro Sessa, the leader of the International Association of Judges, said the government should ensure that the judiciary take part in decisions on the sector’s budget, and that they are consulted on all decisions concerning the sector.

  1. Escalating “Rumblings” in-side the Judiciary of Hungary.
Is this NOT another FACT, that the Orban led Fidesz Government – control the Hungarian Judiciary ?
FACT – accepted by millions over past years but ESCALATING by EXPOSURE – such as the “orderly” conducted and rightful DEMONSTRATIONS as the subject of this article.
ARE Hungarians – the state our country has been DELIVERED to by this Orban led Fidesz Government – “on our knees” – going to grow in number and in the STRENGTH of SOLIDARITY – and accept as FACT this “Heinous” conduct ???
In the CORE of DEMOCRACY, a Government that “directs” the Judiciary is NOT of DEMOCRACY.
Orban and his Fidesz Government – in the (16) sixteen years of there Governance of our country, have played “Big Brother” over the control, the direction and judicial rulings in Hungary.
    Evidence – WILL grow.

  2. Extremely worrying when judges need take it to streets to demonstrate and demand for the freedom of judiciary. Sounds like a clear indication of the government moving steadily towards authoritarian ruling where judiciary is controlled by governing politicians.

  3. Apparently TV2 broadcasted a report trying to claim that there were no judges at the event and that it was all created by outsiders. This is the propaganda line that Fidesz feeds to dim witted Hungarians.

  4. The independence of judiciary resulted in criminals roaming the streets and reoffending, thereby making victims of US citizens. In NY State, the criminals are released before the Police Officers complete their paper work.

There should always be mandatory standards for criminal offences.

No one approves of politicizing the judiciary and I am convinced that the FIDESZ Government did not politicized the justice system. In the future, no liberal judges should ever be appointed because it will only endanger the citizens.

  5. The judicial protest further cements the EU rule of law case against Hungary. There is no hope in Hell for the Fidesz government to ever get the cohesion funds that are being withheld.

  6. The EU spent the money designated for Hungary in Ukraine. The Hungarian justice system is probably fairer that British, German or French. These countries have a dual justice system, if a murder is committed by an illegal give him a medal (never deport illegal murderers) and if it is committed by a citizen, jail citizen for life.
