Epitome of evil: Hungarian serial killer arrested in Florida for murdering elderly, disabled gay men

The Miami Police Department and the Miami Beach Police Department agree that Zsolt Zsólyomi (25) is the epitome of evil and would have committed other murders had he not been apprehended with a joint operation of the local police. His strategy was to seduce elderly members of the local LGBTQ+ community and then kill them. The Hungarian serial killer was in the United States illegally. Earlier, he committed a robbery in Florida, but Hungarian media found that even the Hungarian police wanted him for theft, vandalism, and fraud. He may receive a death sentence.

Hungarian serial killer arrested in Florida

According to local10.com, Zsolt Zsólyomi resided in the United States with an expired visa. However, that did not stop him from committing a strong-armed robbery last year in Broward County, Florida. Tragically, more serious crimes followed.

According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, after the robbery, he was placed under criminal supervision. However, he cut his EM device in a day, changed his appearance and, under the alias Thomas Kray, rented a flat with forged documents. Officially, he worked as a waiter in a local restaurant.

Later, Mr Zsólyomi got acquainted with a 66-year-old Miami senior, Carlos Villaquiran in 2024. The relationship became romantic since both men were members of the LGBTQ+ community, but ended in homicide. Mr Zsólyomi did not tell the victim his real name. However, based on message exchanges the police acquired, Mr Villaquiran discovered the true identity of “Thomas Kray”. “I can’t believe what you did to me and what you took from me,” he texted the Hungarian man and also sent a picture showing a “prominent injury to his right eye,” the police warrant quoted by local10.com said.

Fingerprints found everywhere

Mr Zsólyomi said then that he could not control himself while drunk. The victim asked Zsólyomi to return his cell phone and other belongings, but a month later, he was found face down in his bathtub. Police investigation discovered that the cause of death was strangling. The autopsy revealed that Villaquiran suffered “internal trauma to both sides of the neck, a fractured rib, and a broken bone in his neck.” Zsólyomi was spotted on the apartment’s surveillance camera footage arriving at and leaving the victim’s apartment the night of the homicide.

Fingerprints lead authorities to another murder committed by Mr Zsólyomi in Miami. The victim is another disabled LGBTQ+ senior, 71-year-old Rodolfo Fernandez, who was also strangled, this time with the seatbelts in his crashed car. Surveillance footage also shows Zsólyomi leaving the passenger side after the crash while his fingerprints were found in the car.

Police believe he would have continued the murders

Mr Zsólyomi is in pre-trial detention and cannot be released on bond. “This fellow is a really bad guy,” Miami Beach Police Department Chief Wayne Jones said at a news conference on Friday. “He is the epitome of evil. He hunts his prey, he is patient, and then he kills them.” Miami Police Department Chief Manny Morales called the acts despicable and heinous, committed against “our most vulnerable citizens.”

“There’s no doubt in our minds that if Mr. Zsólyomi had not been stopped, located, and apprehended by our combined efforts, he would have done this again,” Morales added.

Wanted man in Hungary

Mr Zsólyomi is wanted by the Hungarian police for theft, fraud and vandalism. The first arrest warrant against him was issued in November 2022. However, he was in the United States, where he overstayed his visa expiration date, so the Hungarian authorities could not catch him. There is no information on whether he had committed murders in Hungary.

According to Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, even a death sentence is not excluded in his trial because he committed the second murder soon after the first.

Local Hungarians shocked

A local Hungarian, András Fekete, who works as a hotel manager and has been living in the USA for 20 years, acquiring American citizenship, said Zsólyomi disgraced their entire community. The Hungarian colony in Florida is tight-knit. He added that the murders happened in Miami’s elegant area, and both victims were wealthy.
