‘Golden age’ ahead for US-Hungary relations, says top American diplomat – VIDEO

Robert J. Palladino, the newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, has outlined his optimistic vision for a potential “golden age” in U.S.-Hungarian relations. In his first public interview since arriving in Hungary, Palladino participated in a fireside chat hosted by the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) on 8 April 2025. The event, titled “New Momentum in Hungarian-American Relations,” marked a pivotal moment in bilateral diplomacy and highlighted shared values and mutual goals.
A renewed partnership under Trump’s leadership
Palladino emphasised that the return of President Donald Trump to office has created new opportunities for collaboration between the United States and Hungary. He described this period as a time to focus on shared priorities such as prosperity, safety, and security, guided by a “back to basics” approach rooted in common sense and traditional values. The diplomat praised Hungary’s government for its ability to align with U.S. perspectives, noting that both administrations prioritise mutual understanding and reciprocity.
Key diplomatic themes
During the discussion with Gladden Pappin, President of HIIA, Palladino touched on several critical areas of cooperation:
- Energy security: Palladino highlighted energy security as a top priority, emphasising the importance of nuclear fuel and small modular reactors. He noted his visit to Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant and expressed optimism about future collaboration with U.S. companies to enhance Hungary’s energy independence.
- Defense cooperation: The Chargé d’Affaires underscored growing momentum in military collaboration between the two nations, including strategic planning and ground-level cooperation. He commended Hungary’s contributions to NATO defense initiatives and stressed the need for Europe to strengthen its military capabilities.
- Trade strategy: Palladino reiterated President Trump’s commitment to ensuring fairness and reciprocity in trade relationships. He acknowledged progress in reducing non-tariff barriers and called for active EU participation in strengthening U.S.-EU trade ties.
- Russia-Ukraine war: Palladino expressed cautious optimism about ending the war in Ukraine, praising Hungary’s consistent advocacy for peace. He emphasised that European countries must take greater responsibility for their security by increasing defense budgets and contributing to unified leverage within NATO.
Cultural appreciation and shared values
Reflecting on his first month in Hungary, Palladino expressed admiration for Hungary’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage. He highlighted the historical connections between the two nations, stating, “We share blood, we share history, and we share our future.” This shared legacy serves as a foundation for deeper cooperation.
A shift away from activism
Addressing past tensions in diplomatic relations, Palladino emphasized a return to traditional diplomacy free from activism. He stated that the U.S. Embassy would focus on achieving tangible results rather than ideological pursuits. This approach aims to rebuild trust and strengthen leadership-level ties between Washington and Budapest.
Optimism for a Golden Age
Palladino concluded with an optimistic outlook for U.S.-Hungarian relations, describing this period as a potential “golden age” if goodwill is transformed into concrete results. He highlighted the strong relationship between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and President Trump as a productive framework for advancing cooperation across various sectors.
Broader context of U.S.-Hungarian collaboration
In addition to his remarks at HIIA, Palladino has actively engaged with Hungarian leaders to address shared challenges such as migration pressures, European defense integration, and economic stability. Hungary’s notable contributions to NATO defense spending—exceeding 2% of GDP—further underscore its role as a reliable ally within transatlantic partnerships.

That is … A lot of talk. Lets see what ends up actually happening. As I type, Hungary is (rightly in my opinion) still subject to more stringent ESTA rules than anyone else, we still do not have a tax treaty, Mr. Rogán is still subject to sanctions, and all the US tariffs also apply to us – repost regarding the United States Trade Representative Report, SPECIFICALLY referencing Mr. Trump:
“March 31, 2025 – WASHINGTON — Today, the Office of the USTR submitted the 2025 National Trade Estimate (NTE) to President Trump and Congress. The NTE is an annual report detailing foreign trade barriers faced by U.S. exporters and USTR’s efforts to reduce those barriers.”
“No American President in modern history has recognized the wide-ranging and harmful foreign trade barriers American exporters face more than President Trump,” said Ambassador Greer. “Under his leadership, this administration is working diligently to address these unfair and non-reciprocal practices, helping restore fairness and put hardworking American businesses and workers first in the global market.”
“The findings of the 2025 NTE underscore President Trump’s America First Trade Policy and the President’s 2025 Trade Policy Agenda. To read the 2025 NTE, click here.”
Link to the source – 2025 NTE. You will have to search for “Hungary” since we did not get our own chapter, and it would appear Mr. Palladino has not yet had the opportunity to read this:
