K bridge leading to the Sziget Festival over River Danube dangerous? – UPDATED: BKK

The welcome awaiting Sziget’s hundreds of thousands of punters includes a bridge to the island with cracked concrete, rusty railings and a potholed pavement, Alexandra Szentkirályi, the leader of the Fidesz group in the city assembly, said in a post on Facebook on Monday.
Former Deputy Mayor Szentkirályi says the bridge leading to Sziget Festival is dangerous
The Fidesz politician called the “dangerous” bridge an accident waiting to happen. She noted that the bridge is owned by the capital, and Budapesters had been waiting for years for the city administration “to finally do something” about it.
But the mayor, Gergely Karácsony, had made more and more promises without actually doing anything, she said, adding that the central government “offered to replace the bridge in 2021, but the offer was rejected”.
To be a world-class capital, Szentkirályi said, required more than simply burnishing the city’s international image; it meant paying attention to basic infrastructure, too.
K bridge is safe, says BKK
According to the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), the K Bridge is currently safe but requires renovation. They stated that the overpass was inaugurated in 1955 and was originally a railway bridge, which now serves Budapest residents as both a passenger and public road bridge.
Since no major renovations have been carried out since its inauguration, it is now due for refurbishment. However, it remains safe for visitors to the Sziget Festival and other events, as Budapest Közút regularly undertakes necessary repairs. Additionally, the structure’s condition is closely monitored during the annual Sziget Festival.
Plans for the renovation are ready, but all construction permits have expired due to a lack of funding for the project. Consequently, new permits will be required before work can begin.
