Péter Magyar announces Dávid Vitézy as Hungary’s new transport minister
Based on a recent Facebook post shared by incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, Hungary’s next transport and investment minister will be Dávid Vitézy. Vitézy was a mayoral candidate for Budapest backed by Orbán’s Fidesz, but he could not win against Gergely Karácsony in 2024. He now works as a local councillor in Budapest’s municipal council, leading the Podmaniczky Movement.
As Péter Magyar pointed out in his post, Vitézy has been interested in urban and public transport developments since his early childhood. “He has been working for 20 years to help Hungary enter the 21st century in those areas as well,” Magyar added. Magyar acknowledged that, as the former head of the Budapest Transport Centre, Vitézy contributed greatly to renewing Budapest’s transport system. He criticised Fidesz transport minister János Lázár for his sins against the passengers of Hungarian railways and the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) employees.
Magyar entrusts Vitézy with leading MÁV out of the current chaos and beginning the execution of the Tisza transport and urban development programme. Furthermore, his task will be to restart the development of the Hungarian railways and transport system, following in the footsteps of 19th-century minister Gábor Baross and bringing a new golden age with the retrieved EU funds.
New social and family affairs minister to protect Hungarian children
Péter Magyar also said the social and family affairs ministry, responsible for accessibility and equal opportunities, will be headed by Vilmos Kátai-Németh, “for the first time in Hungarian history, a blind fellow citizen”. Mr Kátai-Németh was born in Budapest, lives in Csepel, and won the Csepel-centred electoral district on 12 April. He lost his sight at the age of 16 but became a lawyer and a black belt aikido master.
He knows the challenges faced by people with disabilities first-hand, Magyar said. He has two children and one grandson.
His main aim is to provide quality healthcare and education for all our fellow citizens. He would also like to strengthen Hungary’s social system and make the child protection system more effective. He would investigate all crimes committed in the system over the last 20 years. Péter Magyar said that Mr Kátai-Németh would work to create a functioning and humane Hungary where all desired children are born and can be raised in peace and safety.
Magyar will announce the Tisza government’s education minister in a separate video at 2 PM today.
9 ministers already announced
Péter Magyar announced on Monday, following the inaugural session of the Tisza Party’s parliamentary group, that the incoming Tisza government, expected to comprise 16 ministries, will see Anita Orbán as foreign secretary, András Kármán as chancellor of the exchequer, István Kapitány as business and energy secretary, Zsolt Hegedűs as health secretary, László Gajdos as environment secretary, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi as defence secretary, and Szabolcs Bóna as agriculture and food economy secretary.
On Wednesday, he revealed on his Facebook page that he had appointed Viktória Lőrincz, the newly elected MP for Kaposvár and its surrounds, as secretary for territorial and rural development in the nascent Tisza administration, while entrusting the leadership of the Prime Minister’s Office to political analyst Bálint Ruff.
