End of an era: Budapest’s iconic confectionery closed in Buda Castle

The historic Ruszwurm Confectionery in the heart of Buda Castle has closed its doors after more than 190 years, marking the end of an era.

Well-known confectionery had to close in Buda Castle

The Budavár Municipality took possession of the premises following a final court ruling in a lengthy legal dispute with Ruszwurm Ltd., which had incurred nearly HUF 500 million (EUR 1,260,000) in debts by using the municipal property below market rent for years.

Founded in 1827 by Ferenc Schwabl, the Ruszwurm is not merely a confectionery but a significant cultural and historical institution located near the Matthias Church. It has been cherished by generations of locals and visitors alike for its authentic Biedermeier interior and time-honoured pastries, including the famous Linzer cake, named after one of its loyal customers in the 19th century.

Legal dispute put an end to it

As VG points out, the conflict arose when Ruszwurm Ltd. refused to accept increased rent proposals, leading the local government to terminate the lease contract in 2015. The ensuing protracted court battles eventually concluded with a verdict favouring the municipality, ordering the company to return the property and repay over HUF 300 million (EUR 756,000) in arrears.

The case also saw public accusations of corruption exchanged between the parties. Shortly after the closure, Miklós Szamos, the 79-year-old owner of Ruszwurm Ltd., passed away from a suspected heart attack.

Before repossessing the premises, the municipality tried to negotiate solutions, including transferring the business to the owners or employees under a new municipal company, but these efforts failed. The mayor of District I, Böröcz László, has announced plans to hold an open tender this autumn to select a new operator who will uphold the high standards and cultural sensitivity befitting Ruszwurm’s legacy, continuing to serve quality confectionery that honours the tradition of this iconic location.

A new chapter?

Thus, although Ruszwurm as it was known has closed, a new chapter may soon begin with a new confectionery operator, preserving the historic ambience and culinary heritage of the Budavár confectionery landmark.
