Trump asked PM Orbán whether Ukraine could win against Russia – here’s the answer

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for “new offensive operations” rather than a ceasefire.

Zelensky: Putin will continue the invasion

“There is no indication whatsoever that the Russians have received signals to prepare for a post-war situation,” he said according to the Turkish Anadolu News Agency. Zelenskyy said intelligence and military reports indicate Putin “is determined only to present a meeting with America as his personal victory and then continue acting exactly as before, applying the same pressure on Ukraine as before.”

The Kremlin has yet to respond to the allegations. The Ukrainian president also stressed that there is “no indication whatsoever” that Russia is preparing for peace, adding that troop redeployments suggest preparations for further attacks.

“If someone is preparing for peace, this is not what he does,” said Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian president added that Kyiv continues to brief its partners on the situation on the battlefield, on diplomacy and Russia’s planning future actions.

Trump asked PM Orbán about Ukraine’s chances

At a press conference on Monday, President Trump said he had previously asked PM Orbán whether Ukraine could win against Russia. Orbán dismissed the possibility of Russia’s defeat in Ukraine. “He looked at me like – What a stupid question. He said that Russia is a massive country, and they win their country, and they win their life through wars. They fight wars,” Trump recounted.

Tass reported that Orbán explained to the American President that Russia has never surrendered in wars but historically emerged victorious. However, it seems both the Russian news agency and Orbán overlooked examples such as Afghanistan.

A friend of mine said that Russia is tough because they just keep on fighting. They [the Russians] beat Hitler, so did we him, they beat Napoleon,” Trump added.

Orbán summarised to Trump that China wins through trade, while Russia wins through war.

Trump to meet Putin in Alaska

Russia launched a full-scale war on Ukraine in February 2022, and despite multiple international mediation efforts, no peace agreement has been reached. US President Donald Trump announced last week that he would host Putin at an upcoming summit in Alaska for talks related to ending the war in Ukraine.

At yesterday’s press conference, Trump announced that he would be travelling to Russia on Friday, although he plans to meet the Russian president on American soil.
