97-year-old Hungarian fertiliser plant on the brink of collapse due to lack of one official document

The Fejér County Government Office has banned artificial fertiliser company Nitrogénművek from restarting production at its ammonia fertiliser plant in Pétfürdő (Western Hungary) due to the deteriorated condition of the pipelines, the government office said on Tuesday.

The technical safety authority of the government office is conducting structural and strength tests of the pressure equipment at the company’s request. Ammonia production is a particularly dangerous industrial activity, therefore the pressure equipment must comply with the strictest technical requirements, they said.

The technical safety authority learnt from the company’s request that the operation of the plant had stopped in May 2025, earlier than than the originally announced autumn date. Restarting the plant – after successful inspections – requires permissions from the authority, but the company has not even eliminated the shortcomings it had earlier identified, the government office said.
