New free Danube beach has opened in Budapest! – PHOTOS, VIDEO

Budapest’s newest free Danube beach, the Duna-Fürdő Árasztó-part in Újbuda, officially opened today. The new public beach in District XI is now the third spot along the Danube within the capital where locals can take a dip. We’ll also tell you where else you can swim in the Danube for free—and without the crowds—right here in the city during the summer heat.

New public river beach opens in Budapest

According to a statement from City Hall, the decision to create the new Duna-Fürdő beach was made at the end of spring. The city government tasked Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt. (BGYH) with evaluating potential locations and methods for establishing safe river beaches along the Danube. The new Duna-Fürdő Árasztó-part was developed at the initiative of Budapest’s city government in cooperation with the District XI municipality.

The BGYH confirmed the site’s suitability for swimming, making it another designated bathing area along the Danube in the city. According to BGYH’s website, the beach will remain open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM until 31 August, depending on weather conditions, water levels, and water quality. It is accessible via Bus 33 and by bicycle using the dedicated path atop the levee.

Water quality has been monitored since March

Following the beach’s opening, BGYH told MTI that their accredited lab has been regularly testing water quality at designated points along the river since March. The results have been promising, indicating that the water is safe for swimming. One strong sign of improving river health is the return of the mayfly—a species once considered extinct in the area and extremely sensitive to pollution.

As the statement notes, opening and operating new swimming spots along the Budapest stretch of the Danube requires approvals from the appropriate regulatory agencies. BGYH applied for the necessary permits to establish new Duna-Fürdő facilities this past April.

The Duna-Fürdő Árasztó-part is now the second such location in the capital, following the Római Plázs, operated by the District III (Óbuda-Békásmegyer) municipality. BGYH operates the new beach under the same legal and safety standards as its built-in bathhouses.

Opening hours may vary

Services required for bathing in the Danube are available at Árasztó-part in compliance with official regulations. These include restrooms, showers, drinking water on site, first aid service, and lifeguards.

To ensure public safety, water quality will be continuously monitored during the beach’s operating period. However, the beach’s hours may be impacted by changes in water quality, river levels, or rainy weather.

Visitors should also note that this stretch of the Danube is more remote and wild, meaning there are no food vendors or restaurants available.

Budapest’s third free Danube beach

A third, though less well-known, public beach in Budapest is Flava Beach near the Kopaszi Dam at the base of the MOL Tower. Once a paid-entry site, this year it’s completely free—no tickets or minimum spending required. Equipment rentals are available, with prices listed HERE. For the menu, click HERE.

This Danube beach is both easy to reach and relatively uncrowded, offering a relaxed, family-friendly spot to beat the heat.

Based on the weather forecast, this week will probably be the hottest of this summer, so the timing is perfect.
