Kőrösi, Petőfi scholarship recipients fulfil noble task among Hungarians abroad

The task taken on by recipients of the Sándor Kőrösi Csoma Programme and Sándor Petőfi Programme scholarships is a noble and serious one constituting service, a government official at the Prime Minister’s Office said on Friday.

Hungarian diaspora and Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin

The Kőrösi scholarship programme launched in 2013 is aimed at helping Hungarian diaspora communities, while the Petőfi programme established in 2015 focuses on supporting ethnic Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin, the state secretariat for nation policy said in a statement.

A total of 130 scholarship recipients will be travelling to Hungarian communities around the world from 15 September for a period of nine months, Péter Szilágyi, the deputy state secretary, told the opening conference for the next phase of the two programmes.

Skills and knowledge valuable to the diaspora

Szilágyi welcomed that past destinations have been brought back into the programme this year, while Hungarian communities have also reached out from countries that were not yet part of the scheme. The Hungarian communities in France and Denmark are returning to the programme, while the ones in Iceland and Lithuania are joining it for the first time, he said.

The scholarship recipients will be demonstrating skills and knowledge that are valuable to the diaspora and ethnic Hungarian communities, such as teaching folk music and dance, Hungarian language, organising community programmes and helping out at churches, Szilágyi said.
