MotoGP in Hungary: Hungarian teen suffers devastating crash – VIDEO

After a 33-year wait, MotoGP finally arrived in Balatonfőkajár yesterday with the debut of the Balaton Park Circuit. During the Hungarian Grand Prix of the MotoE series—a support event for MotoGP—18-year-old Tibor Varga took a frightening tumble that even his father refuses to rewatch.

18-year-old Hungarian rider takes terrifying fall

Tibor Varga, the remarkably young rider from Debrecen, competes for Italy’s Snipers team in the MotoE World Championship, the premier competition for electric motorcycles. He’s the first Hungarian to ever race in this series and already boasts several wins in the 2024 season.

According to the Hungarian News Agency, Varga started Saturday’s opening race for the MotoE category from fourth place. He got off to a fantastic start, leading into the first corner. However, his braking was slightly too aggressive, dropping him back to third before quickly regaining second place.

While chasing Italian rider Lorenzo Baldassarri in Turn 14—the back section of the track—Varga suffered a heavy crash and helplessly slid toward the edge of the track. Adding to the horror, Italian competitor Mattia Casadei ran over Varga’s leg.

Best performance just a week ago

The race was halted following the incident, and live coverage was cut off. Medical staff covered the area with a privacy tarp—typically a sign of serious injury in motorsport. Race officials confirmed that Varga was taken to the hospital for further examination.

Just a week earlier, at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, the Hungarian rider delivered the best performance of his career, finishing fourth. He currently sits 11th in the championship standings.

Luckily, only minor injuries

Varga later posted on Facebook that he was doing okay. His father was en route to pick him up from a hospital in Veszprém, and Varga had still hoped to return in time for the second race at 4:10 p.m. By shortly after 3 p.m., he had made it back to the track but announced with regret that doctors had not cleared him to race again that day.

Earlier, the event’s official Facebook page stated that in today’s race, Tibor Varga was involved in a collision. He declined painkillers but was experiencing elbow pain.”

His father told Blikk that, fortunately, his son seemed to come away with only light burns on his hand and elbow. Varga briefly lost consciousness during the crash, but quickly regained it and was able to communicate with paramedics.
