Racist attack in Budapest: Man of colour beaten – UPDATE: Two minors detained

Budapest police have detained seven individuals following a violent attack on a man of color in the II. János Pál Pápa Square on Sunday night.

The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) confirmed to Telex that the suspects, all reportedly young adults, were taken into custody after being questioned, and authorities have requested their formal arrest.

The BRFK’s Criminal Division is investigating the incident as a case of aggravated assault causing life-threatening injuries and violence against a member of a community. Police have not released further details about the victim’s condition or the motive behind the attack.

UPDATE: Two minors detained

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office has requested the arrest of three individuals who assaulted a man in Józsefváros, causing life-threatening injuries due to his skin colour.

The police charged a total of seven people with life-threatening bodily harm after the attack, and requested the arrest of three of them to prevent them from fleeing or influencing the evidence-gathering process.

Two of those arrested are minors, and it was determined that the adult suspect could only be prevented from reoffending by arrest, and it was added that further suspects may also be arrested.

In response to Telex’s inquiry, the Ambulance Service wrote that a man with a head injury had been transported from the scene to the hospital.

  1. Balogh its’ you who are clearly trash with that post. Disgusting. Go back under whatever rock you crawled out from.

  2. There may be more to the story so I will reserve my judgment but if it was truly a totally unprovoked attack, motivated solely by the victim’s skin color, then it is reprehensible.

That said, such incidents–and violent attacks in general–are extremely rare in Hungary. Unlike in Western Europe where they are very common, except the ethnicities are reversed. Elect Magyar and start experiencing that here as well!

    • ‘What more could there be to the story?’ If you have any misgivings against anyone, the sensible thing to do would be to invite a law enforcement officer if other avenues for peace could not be further pursued. ‘What more to the story’ could validate 7 people attacking someone? And to minimize the attack just because such incidents are less encountered in Hungary compared to the West, falls short of a pedestrian argument. Michael Samuel

      • Michael Samuel, Calm down please. This idiot Steiner has been writing his nonsense for ages here.
I was so happy reading the news without the possibility of commenting, but the policy changed again and sadly have to hear the bullshit of Steiner and Balogh again! D:
