Budapest–Vienna clash: “Austria shouldn’t lecture Hungary!”

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has levelled “unfounded accusations against Hungary concerning its practice of democracy,” Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook on Wednesday.

Szijjártó said that the president had “collaborated with foreign players” and “stripped an election-winning party of the opportunity to govern”, suggesting that Van der Bellen “should not lecture others on democracy”.

Szijjártó’s remarks were a reaction to the Austrian president’s recent address at the European Forum Alpbach conference in which he had referred to a worsening rule of law situation in Hungary.
