Watch out when driving! Scorching heat and Saharan dust set to hit Hungary

Hungary is bracing for a heatwave and unusual weather phenomena on Thursday. According to HungaroMet’s forecast, temperatures are set to soar between 86–95°F (30–35°C), accompanied by strong, at times storm-force winds, and a cloud of Saharan dust sweeping over the country.
Strong winds and dust clouds may disrupt travel
Meteorologists warn that southern winds will be brisk across much of the country, with the North Transdanubian region experiencing gusts reaching storm strength. Combined with dry soil, the wind may stir up a significant amount of dust, temporarily reducing visibility on the roads. Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution due to these dusty gusts.
Saharan dust to filter sunlight
As if that weren’t enough, air masses from Africa will carry Saharan dust, especially over western Hungary, which will filter the sunlight. Despite clear, sunny skies, HungaroMet says the sun will appear hazy and diffused in many areas. Due to the strong winds and fine desert dust in the air, experts advise against washing your car for now—it won’t stay clean long in these conditions.
Heatwave to continue through the weekend in Hungary
Though dustier and windier weather is on the way, summer heat is making a strong comeback. Daytime highs on Thursday will reach 86–95°F (30–35°C), with the heatwave expected to last through the weekend. Overnight temperatures will range between 52–70°F (11–21°C), with breezier areas staying milder while valleys may see cooler dawns. Rain remains unlikely.
What to watch out for
- For drivers: Expect reduced visibility due to dust in the air.
- For car owners: Postpone that car wash—the Saharan dust will quickly coat your vehicle again.
- For beachgoers: Perfect beach weather is ahead, though sunshine may appear more filtered due to the desert dust.
Summer is sticking around for the coming days, but the heat will be accompanied by windy, dusty conditions—especially noticeable in western Hungary.
