Hungary’s beloved chimney cake takes Montreal by storm: Locals can’t get enough!

Kürtőskalács, or chimney cake (one of Hungary’s most iconic sweet treats with deep roots in Transylvania), is making waves across the ocean. A pastry shop in Montreal, Canada, has introduced the fluffy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside delight to locals, and it’s quickly becoming a sensation.

The Instagram video by Wassim Abdul Khalek shows just how irresistible the Hungarian classic is, whether filled with chocolate, pistachio, or other mouthwatering toppings:

  1. I’m sorry but the kurtoskalacs is maybe THE most overhyped facet of Hungary.

It’s a glorified bread crust sprinkled with a sickly-sweet condiment. As a dessert- and, especially, cake-lover, I am nothing short of offended that this is even a thing, let alone that it’s reached the stratospheric popularity it has!

  2. Don”t eat it then – clearly other people like me adore the simplicity of a crunchy suggary thing without all that cream and other additions – especially good for the lactose intolerant.
