Historic roots of Hungarian, Polish relations ‘withstand test of time’, the Hungarian government believes

The deep cultural and historic roots of Hungarian-Polish relations “are withstanding the test of time”, the minister of European Union affairs said on Facebook on Wednesday.

Boka attended the Karpacz Economic Forum, “one of the most important meeting points of central European economic and political life”, at the invitation of the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation, he said.

This year, there was a will to “continue working together and start new chapters at the same time”, Boka said. “The two countries’ deep cultural, historic and personal ties created a rock-solid foundation even at times when we have to face political waves,” he said. “I believe that our interests and values are mostly aligned, and that good Hungarian-Polish cooperation has no alternative neither on bilateral, nor regional, nor on a European level.”

During the panel discussion, Boka touched on Hungary’s presidency of the European Council which focused on restoring European competitiveness. During the presidency, “we managed to reopen the accession procedure of the Western Balkans countries, make a political decision on the Schengen accession of Bulgaria and Romania, and launched a turnabout in European migration policy and border protection. We also put the matter of strengthening European defence capabilities back on the agenda,” he said.

“I am convinced that the goal in the EU is to become stronger and more successful together while preserving our national identities and sovereignty. The task is not to create a United States of Europe but to strengthen member states and to ensure their welfare in the 21st century,” he said.

Boka’s partners at the panel discussion were Polish lawmaker Tomasz Zielinski, former minister Przemyslaw Czarnek, district leader Adam Krzyszton and Mihály Rosonczy-Kovács.
