Finally: Ryanair expands free cabin bag size!

Starting 4 September 2025, Ryanair passengers will see a welcome change in its cabin baggage policy: the airline has announced that it will now allow carry-on bags measuring 40x30x20 centimetres for free, up from the previous 40x25x20 cm. This change represents a 20% increase in volume (from 20 to 24 litres) and marks a significant improvement in budget air travel.

Why the rules changed

According to Turizmus.com, new European Union guidelines prompted this standardisation, aimed at creating simpler and more transparent rules for passengers by reducing discrepancies among airlines. With this move, Ryanair aligns itself with Wizz Air, which already permits 40x30x20 cm carry-ons. However, easyJet still allows even larger cabin bags at 45x36x20 cm (32 litres), meaning there’s still room for competition among budget carriers.

What it means for passengers

The increased size allows more room onboard, making it easier for travellers to pack efficiently. A warm sweater, a pair of shoes, or a few gifts can now fit more comfortably without incurring extra baggage fees. However, the carry-on must still fit under the seat in front and weigh no more than 10 kilograms. Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Director of Marketing, emphasised that the new policy aims to provide a more flexible and comfortable travel experience, though passengers were reminded that failing to comply with the rules will result in additional charges at the gate.

How packing will change

Before this adjustment, Ryanair’s strict size limits often forced travellers to pack only a small backpack or handbag. The extra 5 cm and additional 4 litres of space now allow travellers to bring helpful extras like a bulkier sweater, a larger toiletry bag, or an extra outfit along with their compact cabin bag.

It’s important to note that apart from the free cabin baggage, Ryanair does not allow any additional personal items. Travellers are advised to plan their packing carefully to avoid overweight or oversized baggage fees.

When does the change take effect?

The new policy will go into effect in September 2025 and will be gradually implemented across all of the airline’s European airports. This means that baggage sizers at the airports will be adjusted to reflect the new dimensions. Passengers should keep an eye on pre-travel updates to pack according to the new rules.
