PM Orbán talks about armed Tisza politician Ruszin-Szendi; Péter Magyar fights back with bullet wound story

Weapons, violence and “armed speakers” have no place in Hungarian public life, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Facebook on Tuesday, commenting on a video recording showing Tisza defence expert Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi appearing at a forum, with the outline of a firearm visible under his clothing. Péter Magyar fought back with the Hungarian defence minister’s “bullet wound” story.

Weapon-wielding politicians?

“I have been in parliament for 35 years, but I don’t remember anyone holding a town hall meeting with a weapon at his side…” Orbán said. “Is this possible? It seems it is, with Tisza.”

“The world is becoming harsher and harsher, tragedy follows tragedy from Bratislava to the US. Let Hungary remain an island of peace,” he said.

Péter Magyar responded with a bullet wound story

In a Facebook post, Péter Magyar pointed out that the former chief of the Hungarian Defence Forces has permission to carry a firearm. He also noted that politicians from the Tisza party regularly receive death threats.

Magyar mentioned that Hungarian Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky recently visited Turkey, where one of his four bodyguards was evacuated on a MEDEVAC plane due to a bullet wound. Magyar questioned why the defence minister travels to a NATO ally with so many bodyguards but did not provide any evidence to support his claim.

Ruszin-Szendi also addressed the issue on Facebook, writing that he has not carried his gun for some time, as the Tisza party has assigned him bodyguards. Since then, he has not been armed. An insider from the Tisza party confirmed to 444.hu that Ruszin-Szendi had not been carrying a gun for at least six months.

However, as the news outlet later revealed, the video causing controversy was filmed at an event on 8 May. Here is the full video:
