Rákosrendező revitalised: Budapest launches international masterplan competition

As one of Budapest’s major urban development projects, the revitalisation of the Rákosrendező area has reached a significant milestone with the launch of an international design competition for a comprehensive masterplan.
Rákosrendező getting the love it deserves
The objective is to create a modern, sustainable, and liveable urban environment on the currently underused or neglected site.
Traditionally a key transport hub and industrial zone in the eastern part of the capital, Rákosrendező has undergone considerable transformation in recent decades.
This newly initiated competition aims to explore the full potential of the area’s development, introducing new functions and community spaces where sustainability and environmental protection play a central role, reports Magyar Építők.

Community is key
The call invites professional communities internationally to submit innovative ideas and creative solutions. This approach encourages innovation and the application of best practices, providing an opportunity for Rákosrendező to become a dynamic and forward-looking neighbourhood in Budapest.
Priority is given to improving transport connections, expanding green spaces, and supporting community life. The masterplan seeks to deliver an integrated urban development that meets the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors alike, while enhancing the overall quality of urban life within Budapest.
Following the selection of the winning proposal, actual development can commence, marking an important milestone in Budapest’s urban renewal efforts. This will inject new momentum into the capital’s growth and contribute to creating a more liveable and modern cityscape.
This exciting initiative holds significant opportunities for professionals working towards Budapest’s future, demonstrating how urban renewal can break with outdated structures and create something new suited to the challenges of the 21st century.
Submissions for the design competition are open until the end of September, with further details available on the official announcement pages.
