A tragic road accident in Styria, Austria, claimed the lives of two Hungarian citizens early on Saturday morning. According to Austrian and Hungarian media, the fatal collision on the A9 Pyhrn motorway was caused by a drunk Austrian driver.

Drunk driver crashed into Hungarian car

Police reports indicate that a 38-year-old man from the Leibnitz district was driving under the influence when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and slammed into a Hungarian-registered car. The impact caused the Hungarian vehicle to burst into flames. Despite the rapid response of local firefighters — who arrived within ten minutes — the blaze could not be extinguished in time to save the two Hungarian passengers.

Both victims died at the scene. Their identities have not yet been officially confirmed, and autopsies have been ordered to establish the causes of death and assist with identification. The Austrian driver, who sustained only minor injuries, was taken to a local hospital in southern Styria. A breathalyser test showed a significant level of alcohol in his system. His driving licence was immediately revoked at the scene.

According to information published by BAMA, the two men from Baranya County commuted between Austria and Hungary in the hope of a better life. Some of BAMA’s readers knew the two men: according to them, one of the men lived in Királyegyháza, while the other, a father of five, lived in Tésenye.

One of the deceased had previously lived in Szentlőrinc and was a member of the local soccer team. According to his acquaintances, he was an exceptionally good man; they commuted between Austria and Hungary in the hope of a better life. According to the newspaper’s readers, the other man was the father of five children and lived in Téseny.
