PM Orbán talks about successfully averting a real disaster in Washington

“I shook hands with President Donald Trump on Hungary’s exemption from US oil sanctions for an indefinite period. As long as he is president there and I am prime minister here, there will be no sanctions, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Monday morning.

Orbán said on Facebook that “it is no exaggeration to say that we have just concluded the most important negotiations of the year so far”.

He added that the stakes could not have been higher for Hungary. The entry into force of US sanctions on Russian energy sources would have caused a two- to threefold increase in utility costs and a 1,000 forint (EUR 2.5) increase in gasoline prices [per litre] in Hungary by Christmas. “A real disaster,” he added.

“We managed to avert this danger. So that Hungarian families could have the Christmas they wanted,” the prime minister said.
