Traffic in Budapest city centre to change due to football match this weekend

On Sunday at 3 PM, the Hungary vs. Ireland World Cup qualifying football match will take place at the Puskás Arena. From midday onwards, significant traffic changes and road closures will be in effect around the stadium, warns the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) in a statement released to the press on Friday.

Traffic in Budapest city centre to change: using public transport recommended

Parking options near the arena are limited, so BKK strongly encourages fans to use public transport. They recommend frequent trams and metro lines—specifically Metro Lines 2 and 4, and Tram 1—as well as the MOL Bubi bike-sharing service for a smooth journey.

Entry to the stadium will be available from Dózsa György Road and Stefánia Road. The venue is easily accessible on foot, not only from the Puskás Ferenc Stadion metro station but also from Keleti Railway Station within a similar walking time via Verseny Street.

Due to constrained parking, supporters arriving from the city centre are advised to take Metro Lines 2 or 4, disembarking at Keleti Station and then walking along Verseny Street and Dózsa György Road. Those travelling from Örs vezér tere should use Metro Line 2, exiting at Puskás Ferenc Stadion station and walking along Kerepesi Road and Dózsa György Road.

Passengers on Tram 1 can reach the Stefánia Road gates (gates IX, X, XIII) by walking from the Egressy Road/Hungária Boulevard stop via Egressy Road. Alternatively, the Dózsa György Road gates (gates III, VI) can be approached on foot from the Puskás Ferenc Stadion stop along Kerepesi Road and Dózsa György Road.

Buses running along Thököly Road will serve the Dózsa György Road gates (III, VI) at the Reiner Frigyes Park stop; from there, it’s a short walk via Dózsa György Road. For the Stefánia Road gates (IX, X, XIII), passengers should alight at Stefánia Road/Thököly Road and walk along Stefánia Road.

Road closures

BKK highlights that on Sunday, from around 12 noon until 6:30 PM, Dózsa György Road between Thököly Road and Kerepesi Road will be closed, along with Ifjúság Road between Dózsa György Road and Stefánia Road, the entire length of Verseny Street, and Istvánmezei Road.

After the match, between approximately 4:40 PM and 6 PM, Stefánia Road will also close between Hungária Boulevard and Thököly Road.

To ease access and departure from the event, BKK will increase the frequency of Metro Lines 2 and 4 and Tram 1 before and after the game. All buses along Thököly Road will stop at Reiner Frigyes Park and the Stefánia Road/Thököly Road stops.

Due to the closure of Verseny Street from noon to 6:30 PM, Bus 30 will be rerouted along Thököly Road and Dózsa György Road in both directions, skipping the Verseny Street stop.

With Ifjúság Road closed from 1 PM to 6:30 PM, the 75 and 77 trolleybuses will only pick up passengers at the Hungária Boulevard trolleybus terminus before Kerepesi Road or at the 901 bus stop heading towards Óbuda near the Puskás Ferenc Stadion.

During the Stefánia Road closure between 4:40 PM and 6 PM, trolleybus 75 will operate via Thököly Road and Hungária Boulevard, missing Egressy Road/Stefánia Road and Szobránc Street stops. Meanwhile, trolleybus 77 will run along Hungária Boulevard between Egressy Road and Puskás Ferenc Stadion, also bypassing these stops.

BKK also warns that further traffic restrictions may occur after the match. Travel planning assistance is available through the BudapestGO app, recommended by BKK for a hassle-free journey.
