Now, this beloved folklore is making a surprising leap into a new genre: a Hungarian-developed fighting game titled Folktale Fury, recently unveiled at PlayIt.

The project’s creator, Dávid Fodor, says the game was conceived as a tribute to the classic stories and characters of Hungarian mythology. Although still in early development, the first trailer already offers a glimpse of the quirky and distinctive experience the game aims to deliver.

The visual backdrop draws heavily on motifs of the Hungarian plains: grey cattle, haystacks, draw wells, peasant houses and wooden carts all appear, while the soundtrack echoes traditional folk songs. The concept itself is delightfully straightforward: iconic folk-tale characters battling one another in a manner reminiscent of the genre’s best titles.

Based on the trailer, players will initially be able to choose from three well-known figures:

  • Királykisasszony (the Princess), who humiliates her rivals with graceful, dance-like moves,
  • Legény (the flute-playing lad), whose special attacks even involve a flock of sheep,
  • And the Devil himself, unleashing spinning kicks and demonic strikes.

The characters have unique abilities

Each character comes with unique abilities inspired by their Hungarian folk tale origins. These special moves recharge over time, encouraging players to think tactically and wait for the right moment to strike. According to the developer, the combat system will offer considerable freedom: jumping, dodging, crouching and circling around opponents will all play a role in battles.

Folktale Fury looks set to bring Hungarian folk tales to life in a refreshingly modern and entertaining way. While no release date has yet been announced, the early footage suggests it could become one of the most intriguing and playful titles to emerge from Hungary’s indie scene.
