Olympic champions to compete at the Gyulai Memorial
Nemzetisport.hu reports that three names to attend the athletics competition in Székesfehérvár have been revealed. This year the event will last for two days, for the first time. Tianna Bartoletta, sprinter, Bohdan Bondarenko, high jumper and Gerd Kanter, discus thrower have already accepted the invitation of the organizers.
The competition will be held in the Regional Athletics Centre of Székesfehérvár on July 17-18. The already introduced three athletes have all participated at the Gyulai Memorial before, writes Nemzeti Sport.
The American Tianna Bartoletta has achieved amazing results during her career so far: she has been World Champion of long jump (both outdoor and indoor) and was a member of the sprinting relay team – which team won the final with an incredible world record of 40.82 seconds – at the London Olympic Games in 2014.
Besides, Bartoletta holds the Gyulai Memorial’s record in long jump with 694 cm, which she performed in 2014. It was not only the long jump that brought her success that year; she managed to claim the victory in the 100 m sprint, too.
The Ukrainian Bohdan Bondarenko is also a proud holder of wonderful titles: he is a World and European Champion of high jump. He made his debut before the Hungarian audience in 2014 and became winner with a competition record, 238 cm. Currently, Bondarenko holds both the European Record (242 cm) and the World Record (241 cm) of high jump.
Thirdly, sports-lovers shall welcome the Estonian Gerd Kanter, one of the most significant figures of discus throwing, in Székesfehérvár. He is also an Olympic (2008) and World Champion (2007) of his sport. In later years he also won silver and bronze medals at World and European Championships and in London. He is going to be one of the major opponents of Zoltán Kővágó at the Gyulai Memorial.
Earlier the organizers have announced the participation of other sportspeople, including the 400 m runners Kirani James and Steven Gardiner, in 200 m Alonso Edward is said to be competing, while the 400 m hurdle race will line up Dalilah Muhammad and Cassandra Tate, among others.
Albeit, the programme is not yet complete, we can be sure that there will be even more to see this time than in the previous years: 19 international and several national races are said to be held.
