Ricky Martin feels right at home in Budapest: here’s what we know about his secret concert – video

Ricky Martin is back in Budapest, but not to dazzle fans with a concert. Instead, whispers say he’s here to perform at the lavish year-end gala for Mészáros Csoport, the empire of Hungary’s richest man and Viktor Orbán’s mate, Lőrinc Mészáros.

Ricky Martin is loving every minute in Budapest

According to the Puerto Rican superstar, he can stroll Budapest’s streets like a local – some spot him, others don’t. That’s how he casually wandered into the Advent Bazilika Christmas market, shared a cheeky video of the outing, and roamed freely. He jetted into the Hungarian capital recently, hit that festive market, popped by the Opera House, grabbed dinner at a swanky city-centre spot, and dashed about undisturbed. His Instagram clip even shows him on a Danube cruise, catching a glimpse of the Parliament building – at least from the outside. And to top it off, he signed off in Hungarian: “Nagyon köszönöm” (Thank you so much!)

He’s performed here three times in the last five years, reckons Hungarians know and adore his tunes – and he feels the love right back.

Political fireworks erupt over his secret concert

Independent MP Ákos Hadházy spilled the beans on Facebook yesterday, cheekily calling out Ricky for skipping a key detail in his video: crooning for a “plumber mafioso.” Hadházy wrote that Ricky Martin belted out hits at Lőrinc Mészáros’s Mészáros Group Christmas do for a cool million dollars.

Cue the backlash. Péter Hajdu, a Hungarian showman, who works for the Mészáros-close TV2, a Hungarian commercial TV channel, says Hadházy owes an apology for blabbing about the star guest as early as Thursday. Loads of folks had guarded that secret tight, just to amp up the thrill for the staff, Hajdu added.

The Christmas gala went down Thursday night in Felcsút at the Puskás Akadémia Sports and Conference Centre. Telex reports the concert kicked off at 9:30 pm, hosted by Nóra Ördög and András Stohl, with R-Go and Kis Grófo also on the bill. The evening raffle? Three Suzuki Vitara SUVs up for grabs.
