Has Budapest become safer and tidier? Stewards hit the ground on 6 squares

Square stewards from Budapesti Közművek have sprung into action across all six of Budapest’s busiest pre-selected plazas, keeping these vibrant hubs spotless and welcoming.
According to a statement from BKM Budapesti Közművek Nonprofit Ltd., these dedicated stewards keep a sharp eye on their surroundings, swiftly picking up litter along their routes. They also liaise closely with local residents, public space enforcers, and other service providers in the area.
From dawn until late evening, the 14 stewards patrol hotspots such as Blaha Lujza tér, Deák Ferenc tér, KÖKI, Etele tér, Örs vezér tér, and Széll Kálmán tér. Their mission is to champion cleanliness and order, politely encouraging pedestrians, market vendors, and dog walkers to adopt responsible, environmentally conscious behaviour in public spaces.

Early feedback from residents and initial observations indicate a clear demand for these stewards. Change is already taking shape on these plazas, with passers-by paying greater attention to keeping their surroundings tidy.
