Hungary’s sky mystery explained: Elon Musk behind the strange light – VIDEO

Many people across Hungary were startled on Sunday evening when, shortly before 6 p.m., an unusual spiral-shaped, bluish light appeared in the sky. Photos and videos of the phenomenon quickly spread online, with some viewers speculating about extraordinary or even unknown causes.

According to Időkép, however, the explanation is far more down-to-earth, though still spectacular. The phenomenon was linked to a SpaceX launch, the space company founded by Elon Musk.

Earlier that evening, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California as part of its “Twilight” mission. The rocket was carrying more than 40 small satellites into orbit.

Although the launch took place on the west coast of the United States, the rocket’s flight path brought it over Europe during the evening hours. As Időkép explains, the striking spiral shape likely formed when the rocket’s second stage began manoeuvring or venting excess fuel before re-entry.

At high altitude, the released gases were still illuminated by sunlight, even though the ground below was already in darkness. This contrast caused the glowing, swirling pattern to stand out sharply against the night sky.

The phenomenon was visible across large parts of Hungary, from Budapest to the southern regions of the country. Időkép shared video footage of the event on its Facebook page, while additional recordings were uploaded to its website, capturing a rare and eye-catching moment in the evening sky.
