Pécs Pride organiser faces charges and possible fine

The Pécs District Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges and proposed a fine against a man who organised the 2025 Pécs Pride march and assembly in October, despite a police ban and supreme court ruling upholding the restriction under the amended child protection law, the Baranya County Chief Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday.

According to the prosecutor’s statement, the man notified police in September 2025 of his intent to hold a processional assembly under the name Pécs Pride, expecting around 1,000 participants. The police, acting as the assembly authority, prohibited the event in line with the child protection law, and the Kuria, Hungary’s supreme court, rejected his appeal to overturn the ban in mid-September.

Undeterred, he continued to publicise the event, urging widespread attendance through various media outlets, and proceeded with the assembly despite the prohibition, the statement added.

The Pécs District Prosecutor’s Office charged him with violating the freedom of assembly and requested that the court impose a fine without a trial, via a penal order.

  1. Being punished for endorsing the freedom to wave rainbow flags, dance around happily and giving speeches about accepting diversity among us. Religious conservatives using “think of the children” excuse for their own prejudice and creating laws of oppression, sure sicken me to the core.
