People are flocking to Budapest on 11 April: searches for available flights skyrocket
Christmas saw the last similar surge in flight searches to Budapest. Hungary’s general elections are set for 12 April. According to the latest polls, Péter Magyar’s Tisza party leads by more than ever, with around 900,000 extra votes ahead of PM Orbán.
24.hu reports that Hungarians living abroad are rushing back to Budapest for the 12 April elections in large numbers. Statistics from repjegy.hu show that searches for flights to Budapest from European cities match Christmas levels.
These figures, shared with the media outlet, reveal that searches for flights to Budapest have doubled. By contrast, demand for the Easter weekend remains minimal compared to a typical workday. Zoltán Holczinger, manager of repjegy.hu’s online division, told 24.hu that the subdued Easter travel is due to the proximity of the elections. Hungarians working, living, or studying abroad are skipping Easter with their families to return home and vote.

What’s interesting is the fact that while they could vote at a Hungarian embassy or consulte, they prefer to vote in Hungary. Do they not trust that votes cast at overseas missions will be correctly counted? For some people travelling to their nearest embassy or consulate could be more time consuming and expensive than taking a flight to Hungary from their local airport but these voters will be in the minority.
