Major traffic changes in Budapest as political mega concert takes over Heroes’ Square

Change language:

Motorists and public transport users in Budapest should prepare for significant traffic restrictions around Heroes’ Square and Andrássy Avenue from Thursday evening until Saturday morning, as a major political concert event organised by Róbert Puzsér and the Civil Resistance movement is set to draw huge crowds. Official updates from BKK and police confirm that closures began from 8 PM on Thursday, 9 April, with some lane restrictions already in place earlier, and are expected to remain until 6 AM on Saturday, 11 April.

The event, billed as the “System-Breaking Grand Concert” (Rendszerbontó Nagykoncert), will be held on Friday between 4 PM and 11:30 PM at Heroes’ Square, with organisers expecting tens of thousands of people to attend. More than 25,000 people have already marked themselves as going on Facebook, while around 90,000 have expressed interest, suggesting heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the City Park area.

Preparations are already affecting traffic flows near Dózsa György Road, Andrássy Avenue and Heroes’ Square, where lane closures and turn restrictions are in force from Friday morning. According to the organisers, the programme will feature around 50 performers, with Puzsér himself also scheduled to deliver a speech, according to Telex. Large LED screens and speaker towers will also be installed along Dózsa György Road and Andrássy Avenue so the show can be followed from further away.

Full closures in Budapest begin Friday afternoon

The most severe restrictions will begin at 2:30 PM on Friday, when several major routes will be fully closed:

  • Kós Károly Promenade in both directions
  • Olof Palme Promenade between Verona angyalai utca and Heroes’ Square
  • Dózsa György Road between Városligeti fasor and Podmaniczky utca
  • Andrássy Avenue between Bajza utca and Heroes’ Square

Drivers are advised to avoid the entire area around City Park and central Andrássy Avenue, as further staged restrictions, lane narrowings and turning bans will also remain in place before and after the concert.

Budapest public transport heavily affected: metro recommended

Surface public transport will also be disrupted throughout the day. From 8 AM on Friday, several BKK bus and trolleybus lines will run on diversion routes, while some stops near Heroes’ Square will be skipped altogether.

Among the affected services are the 20E, 30, 30A, 105, 210, 230 buses, as well as the 75, 79, 979 and 979A trolleybus and night bus routes. During the main closure period from 2:30 PM, additional route changes and shortened services will come into force, especially around the City Park and Dózsa György Road corridor.

Because of this, BKK strongly recommends using the metro network, especially the M1, M2, M3 and M4 lines, as above-ground travel in the area may become significantly slower than usual. Real-time updates will continue to be available through BKK Info.

Huge crowds expected ahead of election weekend

The concert comes just two days before Hungary’s parliamentary election. With major opposition figures and artists taking part, the gathering is expected to be one of the largest public events in Budapest in recent years.

Anyone travelling into central Budapest on Friday evening — whether for work, tourism or the event itself — should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
