Pro-government daily ordered to apologise to incoming PM Magyar over “insect” insults

A Hungarian court has ordered the pro-government newspaper Magyar Nemzet to apologise to prime minister-designate Péter Magyar and refrain from using dehumanising language against him.
Court finds violation of dignity and reputation
The ruling found that Magyar Nemzet had violated the personal rights of Péter Magyar by repeatedly depicting him as an insect in articles and illustrations published in March 2025.
According to the court, the coverage breached his right to human dignity and protection of reputation. As a result, the newspaper has been prohibited from repeating similar statements or imagery in the future.
The publication was also required to issue a formal apology and display it prominently on its website for 24 hours:

Apology issued following court order
In a statement published on its platforms, Magyar Nemzet expressed regret for content that referred to the incoming PM using derogatory language and imagery.
The apology acknowledged that the outlet had described him using offensive terms and published illustrations portraying him as an insect, which the court ruled to be unlawful.
The newspaper stated it would refrain in future from referring to Magyar “in any context” in such terms or depicting him in a dehumanising manner.
Controversial coverage and imagery
The case centred on several articles and visual materials published in March 2025. These included headlines and images that portrayed the politician as an insect and used inflammatory language suggesting he should be “removed”.
The court also objected to accompanying illustrations, including images that symbolically depicted harm being inflicted on the figure representing Magyar.
Political backdrop and reaction
The language used in the coverage echoed rhetoric that had previously appeared in Hungary’s political discourse, including statements made by outgoing prime minister Viktor Orbán during a national address in 2025.
The PM elect responded to the ruling on social media, noting the contrast between the earlier tone of coverage and the formal apology now required by the court. He suggested the outlet may refrain from similar language in future, while criticising what he described as continued misinformation.

Once upon a time Magyar Hirlap was an erudite broadsheet paper read by conservative intellectuals. It’s now a pillar of the gutter press, pumping out the same garbage as the like of Origo except without the naked bosoms and backsides that Origo gifts to its readers as a bribe to read their mind altering trash, or more likely, just to scan their sensationalist headlines. All these ‘articles’ drop off the same conveyor belt in the propaganda ministry as those that appear in other media organs, there was zero editorial independence, even the illusion of it wasn’t maintained.
