Second-degree heat alert in Hungary over the weekend
Second-degree heat alert has been issued in Hungary, by the Chief Medical Officer, from Thursday to Sunday midnight, idokep.hu reports.
According to the forecast of the National Weather Service (OMSZ), increasingly hotter air waves will reach Hungary in the next few days, resulting in temperatures around 35-36 degrees in the afternoons.
The OMSZ issued a first-degree warning in 11 counties in South and East Hungary. First-degree or yellow warnings are issues when the daily average in the region is estimated to be above 25 degrees. The second-degree heat alert, effective in the whole country, is based on a forecast predicting average temperatures which exceed 25 degrees in the following three days.
According to hirado.hu, the lowest temperatures will be around 20 degrees. Monday brings a slow-moving cold front and cooler weather.
UV radiation can also reach extreme levels. The high temperatures can affect anyone, causing health and concentration issues; children, elderly people, and those with cardiovascular diseases are at higher risk. The National Public Health Service and the National Disaster Management advises everyone to increase their fluid intake, while coffee, alcohol, drinks with high caffeine and sugar content, as well as fatty foods should be avoided.
It is advisable not to go outside between 11am and 3pm, and to wear sunscreen and protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses. Children and animals should not be left in parked cars. Everyone is advised to spend a few hours every day in air-conditioned spaces, if possible. The National Disaster Management recommends public places such as shopping centres, libraries, town halls, and community centres for those in need.
