EU summit – Orbán: Hungary to stand by Hungarians in UK after Brexit
Brussels, June 28 (MTI) – The Hungarian government will represent the interests of Hungarian job-seekers and students in the United Kingdom during that country’s exit talks with the European Union, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Tuesday.
Talking ahead of a two-day summit of heads of state and government of the community in Brussels, Orbán said that Hungary’s interests as well as the legal situation were “clear”.
“I can see no unsettled issue in terms of the British referendum. All questions have been answered, since the (EU’s) basic treaty provides clear instructions for such a situation,” Orbán said.
“The situation is serious, we are in an inevitable crisis,” Orbán said, but added that all legal aspects were settled.
Orbán said it was “most obvious” that the migration crisis had determined the outcome of the Brexit referendum. “Unless the EU can resolve issues around migration there will be more and more similar challenges,” he said. There have been repeated calls for referendums in wake of the EU’s failure to resolve the crisis, Orbán insisted. He also added that it was the “wrong” European policy to “criticise countries that start action on their own”. A unified migration policy with clear objectives is needed, he insisted.
Prior to the summit, Orbán met his counterparts of the three other Visegrad countries. The prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia Poland adopted a joint statement to demonstrate shared interests and a commitment to enforce those interests during the upcoming EU-UK talks, Bertalan Havasi, Orbán’s press chief, told MTI.
