Firefly-watching tours in the Danube-Ipoly National Park – VIDEO
The Danube-Ipoly National Park is hosting firefly-watching tours in the evenings once again this year, zoozoo.hu reports.
Firefly swarms can be observed at twilight between 9 and 10pm in the second half of June when the animals use their signature bioluminescent light to attract mates.
According to index.hu, the first firefly-watching tours began in 2007 with only a few visitors, then, year by year, the event grew, and these days’ participants can amount to 2,000 in a single evening. 2015 was the UNESCO International Year of Light, and on this occasion, the firefly was chosen as the insect of the year in Hungary, which also contributed to the popularity of the tours.
Traditionally, the Alcsút Arboretum is the most popular location, both with visitors and fireflies. The insects congregate in the area in large numbers presumably because the level of humidity is suitable for swarming, index.hu writes. This year, many other institutions joined the programme with their own firefly-watching tours as well.
