78 million euros earmarked for overall upgrade of Applied Arts Museum

Budapest, July 7 (MTI) – An amount of 25 billion forints (EUR 78m) has been earmarked in state funding for the upgrade, expansion and professional development of the Museum of Applied Arts, a Budapest landmark building, over the next three years, according to a government decree.

The project includes a full-scale renovation of the main building and an adjacent bloc and adding a new wing to the main building, the decree published in the official government gazette said.

Of the total amount, 2 billion forints will be provided for the project this year, 10 billion in 2017, the same amount in 2018 and 3 billion in 2019. The deadline set for the completion of the project in March 31, 2019.

The Museum of Applied Arts, a masterpiece of Hungarian Art Nouveau, was designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos and built between 1893 and 1896. Its special features include glass-roofed halls and walls decorated inside and outside with tiles made by the renowned Zsolnay factory of Pécs.
