Jobbik presses government to defend rights of ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia
Budapest, July 8 (MTI) – The opposition Jobbik party expects the government to “exert pressure” on Slovakia in the interest of settling ethnic problems in that country, and direct the European Union’s attention to Slovakia’s failure to guarantee basic rights, Jobbik MP István Szávay told a press conference in Budapest on Friday.
Slovakia is holding the EU’s rotating presidency in the second half of 2016.
“If the EU had taken its fundamental ideas on human rights seriously, it would have never admitted Slovakia among its members,” Szávay said, referring to the post-WWII Benes decrees that discriminated against ethnic Hungarians on the basis of collective guilt and had never been revoked by the Slovak government.
