Hungary PM, Ethnic Hungarian Leader In Slovakia Discuss Bilateral Minority Issues

(MTI) – Open minority issues in Hungarian-Slovak relations and other topical issues were discussed by the Hungarian prime minister and the leader of Slovakia’s Party of the Hungarian Coalition (MKP) in Bratislava on Thursday.

Viktor Orban held talks with Jozsef Berenyi in MKP’s headquarters after he had attended the Globsec international security conference.

Their talks focused on the situation of minorities, as well as developments in Ukraine and Europe’s security and economic policy which were the main topics of Globsec, the region’s most important foreign and security policy forum, Berenyi told a press conference.

He said Orban had given him an outline of the Hungarian government’s priorities concerning Slovakia and its ethnic Hungarian community.

Efforts over the past four years were aimed at building confidence between the two countries and their premiers, said Berenyi, adding that Orban reassured him to put “painful” minority issues on the agenda of bilateral relations under his government’s next four-year term.

Berenyi said they had briefly discussed the autonomy concept the MKP had drafted, but not published yet to avoid “mishandling” during a period when a domestic presidential election was held in the spring and the EP election is coming up.
