Memorial dedicated to martyred Polish priest inaugurated

Budapest (MTI) – A memorial dedicated to Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, a Polish Roman Catholic priest associated with the opposition Solidarity trade union and killed by communist interior ministry agents in 1984, was inaugurated in Budapest’s district 3 on Sunday.

Miklós Soltész, Hungary’s state secretary in charge of church, minority and civil society relations, said that Popieluszko had “lent strength and faith to imprisoned, persecuted workers and their families, an attitude that triggered threats and attacks from those in power and love from the faithful”.

Roman Kowalski, Polish ambassador to Hungary, said that Popieluszko’s tragic death was not in vain as “Poles and Hungarians still cherish the same values as they did at that time”.

The inauguration of the memorial, a rosary composed of stones, was also attended by Economy Minister Mihály Varga.
