Parlt Allows Screening Of Fans At Sports Stadiums
(MTI) – Parliament on Monday passed an amendment to Hungary’s Sports Act, under which organisers of sports events will be authorised to biometrically identify fans at the entrance of facilities.
The amendment, initiated by ruling Fidesz and adopted with 111 votes for and 48 against, will enable organisers to use biometric templates with fingerprints, facial features, iris scan or vein patterns to identify viewers above the age of 14.
Radical nationalist Jobbik lawmaker Istvan Apati said that the bill was unconstitutional, and that it was “unnecessary and out of proportion”. The proposal was based on the assumption that a large part of sports fans are potential criminals, he said.
Fidesz MP Imre Vas, one of the proponents of the bill, said that though 99 of the sports fans were peaceful, protection must be provided to them and to the facilities from the remaining one percent.
