Prosecutor questions MP suspected of fraud
Budapest, October 11 (MTI) – The central prosecutor of investigations (KNYF) has questioned Roland Mengyi, a ruling Fidesz party lawmaker, as a bribery and fraud suspect involving public funds, the prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday.
The authority has also searched several premises and gathered evidence, the statement said.
The prosecutor has until Dec. 12 to complete its investigation. Mengyi has not been detained.
On Sept. 12, parliament suspended Mengyi’s immunity at the initiative Péter Polt, the public prosecutor, after an investigation found that he had solicited bribes from social cooperatives in exchange for preferential treatment in their bids for European Union funding.
Mengyi said at the time that he would fully cooperate with authorities and that he supported the suspension of his immunity so that he can clear his name as soon as possible.
