Hungary approves EUR 480,000 for reconstruction of quake-hit Italian church

Budapest, December 23 (MTI) – Hungary is extending 150 million forints (EUR 480,000) in support for the rebuilding of a Catholic church damaged in an earthquake in Tolentino, Italy, the prime minister’s press chief told MTI on Friday.

The earthquake of October 30 hit the Church of the Sacred Heart and Saint Benedict of Nursia so badly that Andrea Carradori, the prior of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Friary, turned to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a letter, asking for his support for the reconstruction, Bertalan Havasi said.

Orbán said in his response that he had turned to his cabinet with the request and the government has approved financial support for the church’s reconstruction. “Europe’s future lies in recapturing its Christian roots which still constitute the most important community-building power that any town or country can have,” Orbán added.
