Syrian man detained for sexual harassment in Budapest
Budapest, January 4 (MTI) – A Budapest court has placed a Syrian man in pre-trial detention, charged with sexual harassment, the Budapest public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday.
The man, pretending to be a Greek citizen, met a Hungarian woman in a Budapest bar in the early hours of Sunday and they started sexual relations with her consent, deputy chief prosecutor Andrea Ãœveges said in a statement. He then became increasingly forceful and rough so the woman withdrew her consent and asked him to stop. He refused and subjected her to sexual violence, Ãœveges said.
The Syrian man has no permanent place of residence in Hungary, his personal circumstances are undefined and his alleged crime is of a serious nature, the statement said. Only the strictest measures will guarantee his participation in proceedings, which was the reason for proposing pre-trail detention, Ãœveges added.
The Budapest police headquarters is carrying out an investigation and the decision is not final, the statement added.
