Deputy Prime Minister Meets Christian Leaders from Holy Land
(MTI) – Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen on Tuesday met in his office leaders of six Christian churches who had arrived in Hungary for a performance of the Eucharistic Symphony, the head of the Prime Minister’s press office said.
Bertalan Havasi said the performance held in the Saint Stephen Basilica on Monday was attended by Joseph Zerey, archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Bishop Melki Murad of the Syriac Orthodox Church, Bishop Pierre Melki of the Syriac Catholic Church, Goussan Aljanian of the Armenian Orthodox Church, Gebrewold Berhane of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and Sobhy Makhoul, chancellor of the Maronite patriarchate in Jerusalem.
The meeting was an integral part of the Hungarian government demonstrating its support for the churches in the Middle East, especially Christian churches in the Holy Land, Havasi said. The Christian communities persecuted by wars and ideologies of discrimination can always rely on the Hungarian government, he added.
Havasi said the church leaders visiting Budapest expressed appreciation of the Hungarian government’s determination and diverse support to help them stay in their native land and continue their service.
