Are you safe? Air quality reaches hazardous levels in several cities and towns of Hungary

Air quality has reached hazardous levels in several parts of the country due to high concentrations of particulate matter, according to a map published on Thursday by the National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Centre (NNGYK), based on measurements taken the previous day.

The air hygiene index system uses four categories: acceptable, objectionable, unhealthy, and hazardous.

According to the data released on Thursday, air quality is classified as hazardous in Debrecen and Békéscsaba. Measurements also show that the quality of air is unhealthy in Nyíregyháza, Sajószentpéter and Putnok.

  1. No surprise. In the rural areas you can regularly see thick smoke coming from the chimneys of old houses. Poor people burn anything they can get their hands on to heat their poorly insulated houses. Thanks to Fidesz ruling, we have the poorest households in EU and in winter time we can even smell how poor we are due to the burning of hazardous waste to heat households that cannot afford proper fire wood.

When we were renovating our house, there were so many people asking if they can have the construction waste, namely painted old wood panels, chipwood and other chemically treated wood. We denied and took the scrap to a junkyard responsible for proper disposal, and hoping that they don’t secretly sell that crap forward to the poor people for a few forints as many would happily buy cheap stuff to burn.
