Another paedophile scandal in Hungary: Child abuser released from prison escapes

Amid the presidential pardon scandal, another stomach-churning sexual offence against children has been reported in a Hungarian tabloid. The paedophile was released from prison and is now on the run.

The Vásárosnamény Police Station has issued an arrest warrant for a 54-year-old man for escaping from custody after he escaped from his house arrest three months ago.

Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, has learned shocking details about the background of the case. The 54-year-old paedophile called László Nemes is suspected of being a real sex predator, who molested children playing sports at the Tarpa football academy.

“According to the well-founded suspicions, the man, who worked as a coach, was also responsible for supervising children at night in the student dormitory. One night in November 2022, the suspect performed a sexual act on a sleeping minor boy. A few days later, he did the same to another underage boy. These acts were repeated in November 2022,” Dr. László Szilágyi, spokesman for the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed to Blikk.

László Nemes was questioned by the police for sexual assault committed against a person under the age of 18, using his defenceless state to harm a person in his care. Blikk understands that the children who were abused were barely 14 years old.

Proceedings to continue in his absence

Dr. László Szilágyi added:

“The man was in custody from December 6, 2022, to November 7, 2023, when the court ordered him to be placed under criminal supervision with the restriction that he could not leave the property assigned to him. The suspect did not comply with this, as he left on 19 November 2023 to an unknown destination. He is currently under investigation for escape from custody. The prosecutor’s office has issued a decision to declare the suspect in absentia and the proceedings will continue in his absence”.

42 children were under his care

The abuser (who could be jailed for up to 15 years) is from Berehove in Transcarpathia. According to Blikk, his sibling rented him a property from the Tarpa municipality for the period of his house arrest, which he was not allowed to leave. He was supposed to report to the police every week: however, he ran away instead.

It is possible that he fled to his home village, just 17 kilometres away, in Ukraine. Blikk has learned from a reliable source that at the time of the crimes he was working at night at the sports club’s accommodation in a neighbouring village, where he was in charge of 42 Ukrainian (and Transcarpathian) children.

“He took care of the children”

Blikk found the caretaker of the accommodation. He now knows that he thoroughly misjudged the deviant man.

“Laci [László – ed.] came to work here a few years ago. From what I saw, he took care of the children, cleaned, did the dishes for them. He also worked as a so-called corpsman, a medical assistant at the club: if necessary, he provided the children with medicine, or if someone was injured on the field, he knew what to do, he also gave them massages,” József Bódi said. He added that as far as he was aware, the children were taken from the accommodation.
