Best ice cream spots of Lake Balaton – PHOTOS
This is one of the most useful guides you could have in Hungary during this long and very hot summer.
Hungary is known for many hungaricums: pálinka, unicum, lángos, hussars. While ice cream is not one of them, over the past years, more and more ice cream spots were opened across the country. Luckily, their refreshing summer desserts represent a very high quality. The number of confectioneries with a wide range of ice creams of all flavours have multiplied over the past years.
The best ice cream places in Budapest
While Budapest is the nr. 1 tourist destination, Lake Balaton follows behind. And when it comes to one of the oldest desserts of the world, Central Europe’s largest lake needs to keep up and present its own list.
Bagaméri Fagylaltozó (2, Kisfaludy utca, Balatonfüred)
The first place on our list is a special one, for more than just one reason. Balatonfüred is one of the most popular towns of Lake Balaton, offering many free time possibilities and a vibrant nightlife. Without mentioning the beautiful promenade at the shore of the lake. Bagaméri Fagylaltozó was opened in 1996 and rose to fame a couple of years ago with its incredible creations and mixtures of flavours.
Locally they are well-known, but this year the whole country learnt about the team as their silky, sweet, sour cream-based ice cream complemented with a Cumberland sauce deserved the third spot at the country’s best ice cream competition.
Hungary’s ice cream of the year and where to taste it
Amaretto Fagyizó (1, Baross Gábor út, Balatonalmádi)
This confectionery is the perfect spot, especially if you are with kids. Amaretto Fagyizó is practically next to the train station, very close to the beach, in a small square, next to a restaurant and a parking lot. At the end of the day, when you are tired from spending the whole day with your kids in the water, and all you want to do is go home quickly and get to bed, you just mention ice cream. The little fountain in the square, which is illuminated with different colours in the evening, gives an extra touch to the experience. A big cone of ice cream and some running around the fountain will definitely be the last ingredient for your kids for a nice and long sleep.
Szigligeti Fagylaltozó (16, Kisfaludy utca, Szigliget)
This ice cream shop and café offer the perfect plan for a Sunday. It is situated right at the foot of the Szigliget Castle, in a beautiful and green environment. This view on the lake is worth every minute of the climb.
When you arrive back to the foot, tired and parched, a big scoop of ice cream is the best thing to get your blood sugar level back to normal. Especially if you can enjoy it in one of these huge chairs.
Levendula Kézműves Fagylaltozó Tihany (31, Kossuth Lajos utca, Tihany)
If you have been to Budapest and asked anyone about the best ice cream spots (or read our articles about them), you know that the Levendula chain of ice cream shops is one of the most popular. They have many locations in Budapest, Erzsébet square next to Deák square is one of them. But did you know that they are present at Lake Balaton, as well? Where else would an ice cream shop called lavender be situated? In Tihany, of course.
The little town full of Hungarian history offers many programmes during the summer, let ice cream be one of them.
Which of these confectioneries will you be visiting this year?
