BREAKING: Budapest mayor withdraws public transport changes in the capital
Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapest, announced this morning that he would withdraw last week’s decision which reduced the capacity of the Budapest public transport system by decreasing the frequency of 53 bus, tram and trolley bus lines during Monday and Friday peak times.
Before, Katalin Walter, the CEO of BKK (Budapest Transport Centre), said they could not conduct a public consultation with NGOs or Budapest citizens because nobody negotiates with the turkeys before slaughtering them for Thanksgiving.
Public outcry followed that sentence, and PM Orbán’s Fidesz, a minority group in the Budapest Municipal Council, demanded her resignation.
Mr Karácsony wrote in his Facebook post today that Mrs Walter submitted her resignation, which he did not accept. He added everybody could say unfortunate sentences. However, the CEO does exceptional work. Thus, she can remain in the top job of the Budapest public transport system.
Karácsony said cutting bus, tram and trolley bus frequencies fell victim to the 2024 municipal election campaign. Therefore, he decided to withdraw it.
We collected in THIS article the 53 public transport lines affected by last week’s decision.
