Government official: Budapest airport’s repurchase ‘strategically important’
The repurchase of Budapest airport by the Hungarian state has been of strategic significance, Csaba Dömötör, state secretary at the prime minister’s office, said on Monday.
Budapest airport repurchase
The airport is “a gateway to the country, to 15 million passengers, which number could even double in future,” he said on Facebook.
It reflects well its strategic importance that its turnover has tripled over the past 20 years and nearing records of pre-pandemic levels, Dömötör said.
“The airport generates profit for the country with a potential to pay a dividend of up to 35 billion forints (EUR 90m), “so it doesn’t take money, it brings money to the state.”
The government announced in June the acquisition of an 80 percent stake in Liszt Ferenc operator Budapest Airport, partnering with French airport company VINCI which acquired a 20 percent stake.

More Fidesz lies. The Hungarian state paid 80% of the 3.1 billion euro sale and took on responsibility for 80% of the 1.2 billion euros in loans that the airport had. How much are the financing costs Hungarians are paying for all of that debt? The state is broke. This purchase added to its’ debts. Does the “up to” 90 million euros cover the costs of financing of that debt? Moreover, when Hungary took on all of that debt it made Hungary that much less able to borrow to spend on more desperately needed things like railways, transit, hospitals, schools, etc. more difficult. The private sector had everything paid for and the Fidesz idiots took on debt they absolutely didn’t need to take.

The airport was Skytrax award winning and extremely well-run. It was a mistake to upend the management team that took the airport to such heights. Just wait for even more hideous prices in the cafes, charges for things like baggage trolleys and passenger drop off, the removal of water fountains as well as even more nauseating government advertising about ‘Family Friendly Hungary’.

Budapest should have the largest regional airport, with connecting flights between all major hubs.
There are no direct flights from the USA to Hungary, so people fly to Vienna or Poland to get to Budapest.
Direct flights to NY should be priority #1
