Budapest-Belgrade railway completion announced: here’s when the railway will be operational

The Hungarian section of the Budapest-Belgrade railway, a crucial transportation link between Central Europe and the Balkans, is nearing its completion. According to recent announcements, the railway line is expected to become operational by the end of 2025 or early 2026. This timeline marks a significant milestone in the project, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic growth by positioning Hungary as a key transit country between East and West.

The Hungarian section of the railway is being upgraded at a cost of approximately HUF 800 billion, Világgazdaság reported based on the Facebook post of transport minister János Lázár. The project involves the construction of a two-track line, allowing for increased speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour (100 miles per hour). This will significantly reduce travel times, with journeys between Budapest and Kelebia expected to be shorter by about an hour.

The Budapest-Belgrade railway project is part of a broader strategy to improve regional infrastructure and enhance trade between Europe and Asia. The line will provide a direct connection to the Port of Piraeus, offering the fastest transport route between the Far East and Western Europe via Greek ports.

The project is funded primarily by Chinese banks as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, highlighting its strategic importance in global trade dynamics. The railway’s modernisation includes the construction of five new station buildings and the renovation of eight existing ones in Hungary. Additionally, new pedestrian underpasses, elevators, and modern passenger information systems will be installed to enhance the travel experience, Délmagyar writes.

The project’s completion will not only improve passenger services but also significantly boost cargo operations, making Hungary a pivotal player in East-West trade.
