Severe weather alert issued for Hungary: Thunderstorms and flash floods expected

Hungary is bracing for a wave of severe weather as meteorologists warn of thunderstorms and potential flash floods starting this afternoon (Wednesday, 23 April). According to HungaroMet, the national meteorological service, the first storms are expected to develop in the North Hungarian Mountains (Északi-középhegység) region, gradually spreading to other parts of the country.
These thunderstorms may bring strong wind gusts, hail, and intense downpours. In some areas, particularly in mountainous regions, the accumulation of over 50 mm of rainfall in a short period could lead to flash flooding, Portfolio reports based on HungaroMet.
An initial (yellow) level warning has been issued for the entire country for today and tomorrow. While the likelihood of thunderstorms may decrease overnight, western and southwestern regions could still experience storm activity during the first half of the night. On Thursday, an approaching cold front is expected to further destabilise the atmosphere, increasing the frequency and intensity of thunderstorms across Hungary.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding. Motorists should exercise caution due to potential reduced visibility and slippery roads.
